Litchfield Montessori School, established in 1972, is nestled on a four acre campus surrounded by meadows and woodlands in the Northfield section of Litchfield. LMS has provided families from the greater Litchfield, Torrington and Waterbury areas with a classic approach to Montessori education for children ages 15 months to 12 years old.
Our dedicated and experienced faculty are guided by the principals and practice of Dr. Maria Montessori and ensure a rich learning environment where a child’s natural love of learning is nurtured. The exercise of choice in work activities and the development of initiative assist in the formation of a learner who can think independently, creatively, develop special interests, and learn to organize their time and activities. Cooperative learning is stressed over competitive learning; research has verified that children who learn cooperatively have a stronger sense of their own responsibility for learning and their own potential. As a result, they are self motivated, higher achievers, and lifelong learners.
Our mixed aged classrooms create a sense of community, purpose and security. Opportunities are inherent in everyday routines to learn the value of diversity, in a world that is increasingly diverse; the development of empathy, tolerance and compassion, which are of the highest cognitive orders, are a priority. The child is supported in the development of essential social skills and emotional growth. A Montessori education teaches a child that they are a part of not just locality, or a state, rather they are “a citizen of the world,”
